Tinahely Village

Tinahely lazes on the banks of the river Derry, situated between the towns of Aughrim and Shillelagh. It is a modest village, small but compact, slotted in the southern borders of the scenic County Wicklow. Ashfield House Bed and Breakfast is located just over a mile outside the village.

Following the destruction of the village in the 1798 rebellion, Tinahely was rebuilt by Earl Fitzwilliam. The historic court house which dominates the central town square now houses the local library and an arts centre that hosts exhibitions and theatrical and music events. The square also once housed prison-cells which were adjacent to the court house. These have now been converted into offices.

Flanking the square are several pubs, shops, a bank and a post office, restaurant, chemist, hairdresser and beautician. The village also has a resident doctor. There are two churches for both Roman Catholic and Church of Ireland denominations.

In the summer, Tinahely comes alive with entertainment. With four pubs in the centre, there is usually traditional music to be found any night during the week. The main event of the year has to be the Tinahely Show which takes place annually on the August bank holiday weekend. The Wicklow County Agricultural Show is the central feature supported with international entertainment, home-produced craft trade exhibitions, together with industry and agriculture. Also featured are the popular show-jumping event and children's entertainment.

Visitors attending the Tinahely Show are advised to book their accommodation well in advance!
