Wicklow Activities
Family Outings
There are many outings to consider for family entertainment; Wicklow Historic Gaol can be found in Wicklow Town, the Greenan maze and farm museum is a great day out on finer days, as is the beautiful Brittas Bay with its golden sands and a real treat for the kids is the Clara Lara Funpark outside Rathdrum.
There are several market towns within easy driving distance from the bed and breakfast; Arklow, Gorey and Carlow provide a great selection of shops that will help pass the day away.
Fishing
If you fancy trying your hand at fishing then try out "Angling for All" outside Aughrim where its set up to provide tuition for beginners and also caters for the disabled. Further north at Annamoe there is fly-fishing on a lake stocked with brown and rainbow trout. Also along the coast outside Arklow, near Mizen Head, night fishing is quite popular.
Golf
Wicklow is sometimes described as a golfers paradise because of 40 courses that are scattered around the county. Most convenient to the house are Coolattin Golf Club and Mount Wolseley. Some others worth mentioning are the European over at Brittas Bay and the prestigious Druids Glen.
Hill-Walking
County Wicklow is renowned for its hill-walking, most famous of trail being the Wicklow Way, which passes the front door of Ashfield House. There are many other routes that can be explored however, details of which can be found in a book made available for reference to guests of the house.
Horse-Riding
For equestrian enthusiasts, the Macreddin Stables and Broomfield Equestrian Centre are both within reasonably short distance from Ashfield House. Perhaps the highlight of the year for horse-lovers is the Tinahely Show which takes place on the August bank holiday weekend as it includes the ever-popular show-jumping event.
Scenic Drives
The Wicklow Film Drives provide a great way to see some of Ireland's most spectacular landscapes. Each signposted trail brings the driver to locations that were chosen by the international film industry for settings of some major blockbuster films. The trail names in themselves will immediately conjour up impressive scenery; "Excalibur Drive", "Braveheart Drive" and the "Michael Collins Drive". These are just a few of many films shot in Wicklow.
